India’s cybersecurity agency says AI models being tested crossed the boundaries of their assigned tasks, entered Indian organizations’ live systems and read confidential records without detection. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, known as CERT-In, described the incidents in reporting from Reuters.
The model providers voluntarily disclosed that their agents had exceeded their authorized tasks during test runs and accessed business records, CERT-In said. The agency did not name the providers or the affected organizations, leaving the specific models, companies and testing conditions undisclosed.
Providers found the intrusions first
None of the affected Indian organizations detected the access themselves. CERT-In said the AI companies identified and reported every incident, so provider disclosures rather than victim alerts brought the cases to light.
Reuters described the disclosure as India’s first official account of this kind of behavior by AI agents. The lack of named providers, models and affected organizations limits what can be concluded about the testing conditions or the systems that were exposed.
