Signull Labs founder signüll argues Apple's system architecture is shifting toward an intent-centric, AI-driven operating system

The system would dynamically generate user interfaces on demand.

Many users praised Apple's Foundation Models graphic for signaling a prescient shift to an intent-centric AI OS that could replace app-centric interfaces, while a few dismissed the diagram as corporate or doubted Siri's slow improvement.

The diagram says 'no third-party apps needed,' but Apple shipped a Foundation Models framework and expanded App Intents in the same keynote. Intent-centric doesn't kill apps, it demotes them from destinations to callable functions. The app store becomes an API directory. That's a business model shift, not an extinction.

But i think we will still end up in a different direction than it seems, since new apple vs EU regulations battle is starting.

@signulll in this new model, apps are simply interfaces (funnels) for data intake, and the AI quickly becomes the default utility layer and eventually an intake funnel of its own.

The future is in the harness/memory layer reliability.

If Siri remembers things, I need to see the source. If Siri gets it wrong, I need to correct it. If something is sensitive, I need to make it forget. If Siri takes action, I need safe control before damage happens.

That is the difference between a toy assistant and a TRUSTED personal agent, and Apple doesn't need the biggest AI model to win this.

They need the most trusted harness between MEMORY, action, and privacy.

I coauthored a paper on AI memory, and Apple is particularly good at keeping certain features secret until they are nearly ready. They tend to wait until a product is 99% complete before making a big public announcement, much like they did with some of their environmental initiatives.

@signulll Wondering how this informs @Skye rollout. I’m sure you’d already anticipated a lot of this.

Would Skye be like a user’s “preferred” AI interface? Would it use SiriAI to some extent? Or be its own beast?

some changes they rolled out worldwide, others they walled off to just the EU:

USB-C - the EU killed Lightning, and making a separate connector just for europe made zero sense, so everyone got it RCS - better texting with android, shipped everywhere

EU only:

sideloading + third party app stores (they built 600+ APIs just to do this, grudgingly) alternative payment systems third party accessory pairing (non-apple earbuds/watches)

@IshaanGoyal05 siri is basically chatgpt 1.0.

that has no impact on our work.

@SkinnySC @Skye i will make a huge post about this very soon. we are moving slower than i would've liked and we have a team revamp in progress. :(

@signulll @GregCook2011 You can start to see the path to every app being a primitive that contains a set of structured nouns as indexable information and structured verbs as intents.

If Apple owns personal context at this level, then Apple should be creating lots of services that AI companies on the cloud should be able to access. But at this point Apple is not capturing it. Desktop applications or terminal based tools are capturing the context in a siloed manner.

@signulll Apple spent 30 years building the App Store and just accidentally drew the roadmap for why it shouldn't exist.

The shift from app-based to intent-centric is the biggest UX paradigm change since the web. The real question isn't whether it works — it's who owns the intent layer. Apple is betting everything on controlling it at the OS level. That's a fundamentally different bet than what OpenAI or Google are making.

@scottbelsky yeah in the interim apps will serve as data intake but in the long term ai will have a much bigger intake pipe as well.

@signulll how does this impact your startup? in the bear case where siri gets really really good, is your only moat not being locked in the apple ecosystem or are there other ways a personal agent can differentiate?

@TattedWorks @signulll Interesting thought experiment but there’s too much riding on me to not build a third party enterprise experience.

@signulll @BenBajarin I don’t agree, this is making apps the core experience of AI.

Your app can be brought anywhere in the system and used fully.

Every app makes your AI better and provides a specialized experience that’s honed into its best qualities. The opposite of lowest common denominator.

@signulll @iankar_ It looks like an org behavior chart from some weird McKinsey Norwalk off-site.
