Japan's biggest problem is they suck at software, have always sucked at software and will keep sucking at software
Now that the most important thing is AI, which Taiwan builds the chips for with memory from Korea, they completely missed the boat on the hardware part (which they used to be still good at)
And because they can't do software, they're going to alienate the last of their customers with AI features that suck because they can't do software

my rough understanding of comp photography and mirrorless cameras is that nothing stops us from stacking 30 differently exposed images and doing iphone-like clever ml to get a pareto better image. but this is not it :(

It’s the hierarchy, the fear of making mistakes, slow decision-making, and a deeper fear of innovating too aggressively.
Japan is amazing at refining, perfecting, and preserving tradition, but that same mindset can make change harder. Modern software rewards speed, experimentation, iteration, and sometimes breaking things to learn faster.
That works great for trains, cars, hardware, and craftsmanship, but not in software.

@levelsio Sad but true. Max respect for how Japan did gamedev in 80s and 90s but it's a different world now. Everyone here is comfortable enough so that there's no incentive to learn English and go study/work abroad. I deal both with Japan and China and I see the difference first hand.
@levelsio I once heard that Japanese codebases are organized into contributor folders instead of logical modules. Sounds completely insane.
As someone who lived in Japan, I partly disagree. They suck at software pre-AI, but the only reason they suck is because of the language. That's why it has always been super easy to get software jobs in Japan if you can speak N3 or even N4 Japanese and even in some cases no Japanese.
That barrier is gone now with AI. They can use their own language and get working code, so the issue now is not software its the same as the west its just education which is also easier.
Japan has to catch up, but right now, they are doing a massive amount of the right things while the rest of the world is slowly becoming soft.
The government just offered to pay for people's dating app subscriptions to get people to date more. Thats insanely smart.
