Stability AI co-founder Emad Mostaque says Chinese AI labs will outperform US rivals if they secure sufficient compute
Industry figures agreed, highlighting the impact of global export controls.
Positive users highlight Chinese AI efficiency and open-source value in potentially surpassing US labs with equal compute, while negative users respond with insults, dismissals of models like Grok, and criticism of US policies.

@EMostaque Without our data? Interesting presupposition that cultural value is somehow suddenly universal, when it never was before.

@EMostaque If Chinese labs got access to the Chinese talent in America, it's game over

@SciumoInc they have all our data they need. You think they care about US copyright too.

@EMostaque xAI has the most compute and Grok sucks
a lot of compute is necessary but not enough

@EMostaque after some testing, what is mostly becoming clear is that if they wouldn't get access to training set we could really know how far behind or not they are
@EMostaque If GLM-5.2 was trained on Ascend and Huawei is able to deliver at scale, Chinese labs will rule. On the other hand, opportunities for labs all over the world will open up. Win-win there.

@EMostaque At this point that is what should happen. America has lost its mind. The Trump Nazi regime is crazy.

@EMostaque what does "mog" mean?

@EMostaque there is no other choice for the greater public than to use Chinese AI if the Western labs restrict or cut off access

@EMostaque Do you think Chinese open source models will catch up to American frontier models?

@EMostaque Even granting the compute point: what decides whether Chinese models actually displace American ones isn’t only chips, it’s whether global buyers trust them enough to build on. The US just made that call easier by switching its own models off.

@EMostaque if the talent gap is small, the compute gap becomes the whole war

@EMostaque Don't forget the power.

@EMostaque Seems like the mog is coming sooner rather than later.

@EMostaque Compute is the universal solvent, but talent and data strategy are still the secret sauce. ⚡️

@EMostaque ⬆️

@EMostaque I'd say it's less about compute and more about first-mover advantage at this point. But here's the thing — they're right behind you. And they're doing it open-source.

@richardhutton yeah they have the other bits as GLM 5.2 shows

@SciumoInc @EMostaque You think Americans haven't already sold all their data to Chinese via American data selling companies?
I for one can buy targetted data and stuff on Americans and I don't live in US (atm, only have business ties).
Even X sells the data, and so to Meta and Google to an extent.

@EMostaque 应该把GPU转移到中国制造,他将降价99%,人工智能革命将大大加速
