we've started to have great success with our fully alumina 3d printed and assembled torches! this design combines an exhaust recuperator, which preheats the air we send through an outer annulus, which feeds the torch from the outside. The torch is a swept, twirled, compound nozzle, which combines the effects of a laminar flow and a swirl stabilized flame! the flame appears ghostly, frozen in the air in 3d. it is not flickering at all.

our first complex alumina 3d print shocked me with its ability to hold up, despite some defects in our design near the center. at some point i got up the nerve to test it directly on the propane oxygen torch. it wicked in salt and the whole thing held together. I started to suspect that this triply periodic minimal surface was an incredibly strong, balanced structure, that could flex and take the thermal expansion.

we've been developing the hydrogen flame emitter set up a little further, with more flame / exhaust diversion just using stuff we've had around the lab. but the time is rapidly coming -- we have to build a hydrogen torch and regenerator from scratch.
