In the House of Lords this afternoon, our General Secretary Lord Young of Acton asked Baroness Lloyd of Effra how she reconciles the Government's plans to ban children from accessing platforms like X, Facebook and YouTube with the 'keep up' duties in s15 and s16 of the Online Safety Act – namely, the duties not to remove or restrict content of democratic importance or journalistic content? He pointed out that it's particularly important that access to that content isn't restricted for 16 and 17 year-olds, given that the Government is planning to lower the voting age to 16.
UK government claims social media lacks journalistic or democratic significance to justify proposed teen bans
The proposed restrictions would target 16- and 17-year-olds.
Many users applauded questions challenging the child social media ban's fit with the Online Safety Act, while others condemned the UK government's information controls as Orwellian and dictatorial.

@SpeechUnion @toadmeister She literally just said that young people will only have access to information that @UKLabour approves!!! UK is a dangerous far left dictatorship!!!

@SpeechUnion Under 16s can access “trusted news”…..

@SpeechUnion Do these people even understand how beyond reasonable they sound? A state mandated truth is something that only the most infamous of historical dictators sought to establish.
It’s utterly bewildering.

@SpeechUnion @toadmeister She literally just said that they will deem what is or is not appropriate? This is the biggest state overreach in history
Only their propaganda will be allowed

@SpeechUnion Ah, so only state propaganda 'news' channels will be available. Righty-o. 🙄

@SpeechUnion

@SpeechUnion On state approved content? That's wild.

@SpeechUnion @jemmm85517813 They're making themselves arbiter of "high quality and culturally relevant content". This really is North Korea.

@SpeechUnion @coulson_elle And the even broader right under Art 10.1 ECHR: "the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers". Nothing about "over 16s".

@SpeechUnion Ban is unlawful under ECHR Article 8 guarantees your fundamental right to respect for your private and family life your home and your correspondence
Article 10 protects fundamental rights to hold opinions & express your views freely without interference by public authorities

@SpeechUnion ‘High quality news media’ … meaning the BBC, ITV or Sky News! What an absolute joke. 🙄

@SpeechUnion "Access to trusted news across the UK..."
Who in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport @DCMS decides which sources of news are 'trusted'? Those which align with the Government's policies and agendas?
Another step on the road to the East German model, 1945-1990.

@SpeechUnion @kath21_field High quality content as decided by Labour . They do not have a clue. It is purely Comrade/Dictator/ Compulsive liar imposing total control on all.

@SpeechUnion @DemaineGle22606 I’m beginning to think it’s not about enforcement. It’s a way to coerce adults to self ID & if they don’t then access to the real news would be restricted. So a win-win for the gov. You either comply or are cut off from the real world & subject only to government propaganda.

@SpeechUnion It's obvious that Starmer has no clue or idea about 'child safety' and just wants to 'restrict' any social media criticism of him & his so called Government !

@SpeechUnion And this.. ECHR..

@SpeechUnion It's depressing that the world is watching this dystopia unfold in an allied nation and no one is intervening. They are casually talking about it as if the whole thing isn't an affront to Western Civilization.

@SpeechUnion State approved Media, sounds like Communist China or the former East Germany, Great Britain & many other Commonwealth Nations such as Canada & Australia, along with the EU, seem to have fully embraced the Facist Nazi Ideology & are on the fast track to Totalitarianism!

@SpeechUnion High quality journalism? what?the BBC?
don't think so.

@SpeechUnion State Control in action.
