@s8mb @stianwestlake My fear is that SW1 is not even aware of this. I know AISI, ARIA and @KanishkaNarayan are good but how do we get through Ed Miliband and his support base
The restrictions arrived years ahead of policy scenario projections
Many users fear US AI export controls will harm Europe via poor policies and lost competitiveness, while some praised the timing and urged building local infrastructure.

@s8mb I think this is too broad - if you’re really AI pilled you should drop the broader growth stuff and focus on electricity and chips and don’t worry about the broader reform agenda outside of building turbines because it won’t matter.

@s8mb Agree with everything you say here, but just want to point out that Ed Miliband’s crusade to cripple British energy production means he could single-handedly finish the UK as a great power.

@cosmorxn Certainly he’s the most culpable person but most of the UK political class is to blame. The Conservatives and Labour have both pushed this madness enthusiastically.

@bakkermichiel So we'll have more meetings…

@Dorialexander @bakkermichiel And coalitions

@s8mb @ersatzben Explored this in 2024 here, reckon it stands up pretty well https://open.substack.com/pub/cassiai/p/faustian-bargain-20-life-under-the?r=e889y&utm_medium=ios

@bakkermichiel Imo this is a best case scenario thanks to the continued incompetence of the USG. Better now when Europe can still course-correct than when it's too late

@s8mb wind power catching strays

@ShakeelHashim Why do you think this? Like I agree that’s a plausible thing to expect to happen but what’s the incentive?

@the_cs_book @stianwestlake @KanishkaNarayan Yeah, those of us who are taking this seriously need to get much more involved. The only thing that really makes me hopeful on that front is that the people who *do* are pretty talented.

@ftning Most of this doesn’t really need to happen at EU level.

@davidshor I don’t think these are broad growth ideas, and I’m not at all confident that electricity and chips alone are sufficient!

Europe will become a 3rd world country driven by the 3rd world moving in. All the millionaires are leaving.
There is no incentive anymore. Taxed to bits with so much bullshit red tape
The US and China will become the only 1st world. Europe is collapsing and run by clowns who dictate everything form their socialist left wind ideology.
It's tragic

@s8mb http://europe2031.ai was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed it (if that's the right word!)

@s8mb @ASM65617010 Feel free to include UK on that list. They (again) mistakenly thought they are special in this, with all the labs having a footprint there.
Same for Switzerland, mistakenly thinking their Zurich base means something.
@ETH_en @ETH @swiss_aisummit @swissinnova @SwissGov

@s8mb I wrote something similar, but less intelligent this morning; this is a wake-up call of things to come for sure, need a passport to access AI Model Z?
Sorry, you're not allowed in, you didn't pass KYC and there's no appeals process.
Ciao-for-now.

One step would be to pay TSMC to set up FABs in Europe (make it so that they are more or less guaranteed profits from doing that).
Another step would be to offer ASML deals where governments help fund the scale-up up production.
Could also offer the US to help fund scale-up of whichever lab is the leading lab, as part of agreements that involve agreeing to certain post-ASI principles + some mechanisms that involve mutual oversight and maybe some degree of power-sharing. Not something I would guess is realistic at the moment, but maybe still a good type of thing to think about and not rule out as a possibility.

@s8mb i agree with everything you said and commend your work (sisyphus would be proud)- with that out of the way, if UKR doesn't change the EU regulatory framework materially, this won't either.
