Free distraction-blocking apps for iOS and Android

Free phone-blocking apps can make distracting software harder to open by adding a deliberate physical step, such as tapping an NFC tag or scanning a code, before access returns.

WIRED's Justin Pot argues that this small inconvenience can be more effective than another on-screen reminder. The goal is not to make an app impossible to use. It is to interrupt the automatic habit of opening it long enough for the user to reconsider.

Different tools for iPhone and Android

For iPhone users, the article recommends Foqos. It can associate a blocking profile with a physical trigger and keeps its data on the device, according to WIRED. A user might leave the trigger away from the couch or desk, making access possible but less reflexive.

On Android, WIRED highlights Switchly from the Vienna developer Saltyy. It requires more setup, including Android permissions, but offers flexible blocking rules. The publication says the free tier provides enough features for most people and can block selected features inside some apps rather than the entire app.

Lock is another Android option. WIRED describes it as more polished than Switchly, but it supports NFC chips rather than the wider range of triggers available in the other app.
