Hundreds of everyday-looking AI apps hide sexually abusive deepfake tools

The network includes more than 400 connected apps and domains, some posing as pet-portrait makers or workout coaches. Under certain conditions, the apps load an interface that generates explicit images and videos from uploaded photos. Ads featuring explicit deepfakes on Facebook and Instagram linked to apps in Apple and Google's stores. A researcher found the apps ask a server which interface to show; arriving through a related Meta ad appears to be one trigger.
