Trump Proposes U.S. Government Take 10% Equity Stake In Intel

The reactions to this have been overwhelmingly negative--calling it socialism, communism or what have you. But I think the U.S. govt joining in on Intel as an activist investor (investing in the area by equity, and not by subsidies) is welcome given the situation in the area.

One could see the whole thing from the POV of narrowly-focused industrial policy too. If the govt believes that sovereignty in the area is important, then this is understandable. Intel's foundry business was on the verge of disintegrating. Investing by equity is a valid option!

Intel is the only American company that has the capacity for chip manufacturing, and they have invested a great deal in R&D the past few years, but were running out of options. via the CHIPS act, the govt has already invested billions, with many ending up benefitting Intel.
