Bloomberg Law, citing newly unsealed court documents, reports that OpenAI and Microsoft executives acknowledged their AI tools were substitutes for articles from the New York Times and other outlets, as well as books, and threatened those industries. The Washington Post reports that a legal brief in the Times’s copyright case against both companies quoted Microsoft’s director of applied science, Brent Hecht, calling AI model training the “largest theft of labor in human history.”
