11:53 AM · Jul 15, 2026This would have been huge news for me once. I was at max character limit for over a year. With the launch of the Five series a lot of my custom instructions for helping the model deal with difficult edge cases became completely unnecessary, and simultaneously, from GPT-5 onwards OAI models obsessively focused on anything in there. I assume this was an artifact of the heavy (and effective) instruction following training they did. Chat would try and reference the CI constantly, or work it into every discussion, so I had to delete almost all of it. This seems less of an issue now, so maybe I should redo some of it with this new headroom. If you are interested in creating a persona, there is a lot you could do with 5k, a huge amount honestly. I was never interested in that personally, I wanted the base persona, but I also wanted Chat to disagree with me more, push back, and tell me if I was wrong. This is also less of an issue now with 5.x. I will look back at some of the things I wanted to do that I didn't have room for. I used to love writing custom instructions, but have only one paragraph in there at the moment. I will have to think about this. Custom instructions can be extremely powerful.
