OpenAI policy lead says banning Chinese open-source AI makes zero sense
A policy debate on X turned on a narrower question: whether targeted restrictions on government or critical systems make more sense than a broad ban.
In a post on X, Yo Shavit argued that "it makes zero sense" for the U.S. to ban open-source Chinese AI models on national security misuse grounds, saying such a move "will not have any helpful effect." In a linked earlier post, he argued that a ban aimed at American companies would miss the threat actors agencies worry about, while a ban enforced on U.S. compute would require intrusive monitoring that, in his telling, does not exist.
