Mistral AI Targets 1 Gigawatt of European Compute by 2030

Arthur Mensch retweeted his cofounder Tim's post on strategic thinking behind recent updates. Multiple researchers and investors replied, noting Europe's need for domestic compute to serve inference demand and remain relevant globally. One reply proposed rules requiring a percentage of compute for European customers to be located in the EU or UK. A linked VentureBeat report states Mistral AI plans SLA-backed regional inference, five-year European Compute Unit contracts, hosting China's GLM-5.2, and 1 gigawatt of compute by 2030.

NB Nathan Benaich@nathanbenaichthots: a) europe is gonna need a ton of compute to serve inference that will automate its services sector b) compute is an amazing biz - def better than models if you’re not at frontier c) it’s a way for eu to be relevant on the world stage d) 1gw in 3 years isnt ambitious enough

AK Andreas Kirsch 🇺🇦@BlackHC@nathanbenaich We should have some rules around mandatory compute allocation in Europe and the UK (my own opinion etc). Imo if you serve AI models to European customers, xx% of that compute should be based within the EU+UK for example

AK Andreas Kirsch 🇺🇦@BlackHC@nathanbenaich Or tax slightly more otherwise? Honestly no idea how to incentivize that but compute is essentially a strategic resource and it doesn't matter who owns or runs it as long as there is enough of a regional reserve
