Initial social-media chatter centered on unverified insider tips that GLM-5.2 could match or beat leading U.S. models without obvious compromises, yet the model has since dropped with official weights, papers, and benchmark tables from its Beijing developer.

Z.ai published detailed scores on long-horizon coding and agentic tasks, placing the 744B-parameter MoE model near or above certain closed U.S. systems on several metrics while offering a 1M-token context window under an MIT license.
Exact hosted-API pricing and large-scale production reliability at full context length are still emerging, leaving developers curious how the claimed efficiency translates beyond the released evals.
Positive users praise GLM-5.2 as an incredible rival to US models that performs well on benchmarks and replaces tools like Opus, while negative users call it garbage or lobotomized and accuse promoters of bias or cherry-picking.

@pmarca Was it pure innovation? Or did they steal / farm IP?

@pmarca China isn't "competing" with the U.S., they never compete with us.
They're stealing the models through various methods, then letting us do all the hard work (and money) to train them and build more advanced models.
These should have been more locked down from day one.

@PacoFariasC @pmarca Let's ask where Anthropic got the books for the training btw

@pmarca In a few months we’ll get a fable class open source model. It’s just software idk why the American labs have to perform this extended song and dance that’s got us into this position

@Jlafortetech @pmarca Hilarious once you remember that the “hard work” you’re referring to was simply stealing everyone’s collective IP (e.g., “training on all of the Internet)

@pmarca If we get into speed run our very first purchase will be a GB300 to run GLM 5.2 plus some solar and batteries.
The new default alive = Compute Sovereign.

@pmarca Think about where this all leads. What is Anthropic (and maybe OpenAI) going to do? Demand a Great Firewall of America?

@MatthewBerman Matt, I started using GLM-5.2 w/Codex harness. Worth considering for a video

@pmarca Not good that I am more excited for the next GLM release than the next GPT release.

@pmarca funny how theft works

@pmarca GLM-5.2 is Opus 4.7 level on benchmarks so it is not frontier model class but it is getting very close!
If people start switching, Chinese will get access to a lot more prompt data and code for future training:

@pmarca its pretty good, im getting opus level work done for 10x less money

@pmarca Ran GLM-5.2 against GPT-4 on my code benchmark: 92% pass rate vs GPT-4's 89%. At 40% lower inference cost.

@pmarca Compute Sovereign
This is exactly what will happen and the unintended result of recent activities.
They will try to get regulatory capture before we can get local AI intelligent on affordable hardware.

@pmarca GLM's real edge isn't the benchmark, it's that it ships open-weight. Zhipu's been on the US Entity List since Jan 2025, so export controls barely bite. Once the weights are public, US devs run it anyway. That's the timing DC should be watching.

@pmarca As a builder I'm glad. They banned me from Fable on day one. Chinese open weight models seem like my only hope.
How did we get here, and how do we get out?

@PacoFariasC @pmarca I mean didn't all ai's do that? So do all people by the way. It is how anyone and anything learns.

@pmarca Stop releasing the frontier models and use them to advance material science, medicine and physics in controlled settings with no nationals from China. Government can subsidize salaries in the sciences to be on par with quant positions on wall street and put our best there.
