One wonders if there is any actual customer benefit created by the Compliance concerns, and I’ll offer one: because of the kabuki the customer-facing app has to have the actual prescription info in it, which means it is ~portable to any other glasses store.

(The prescription for corrective lenses is adequately described by something like 6-8 numbers and so could be sensibly copied or re-input, and by custom glasses stores will trust a prescription if user says vision has not deteriorated since last time they had an exam.)

I love imagining the meeting for the (likely outsourced) software engineering team attempting to design a process by which the store can claim with a straight face that it was relying on the customer’s report of their prescription rather than relying on the store’s record of it.
