the open source push is next, the first rumblings are showing up. people claiming that glm5.2 is mythos class will be used as evidence for it, regardless that opus4.8 and gpt5.5 are more powerful.

In my day job org (large, serve hundreds of millions of users) I’m in a position to influence AI choices and I’m steering them to open models having been getting more interested since the Opus nerfing around 4.6-7. The recent fuckery means that open models are absolutely vital right now.

@bindureddy @Nymne I get what the US admin was trying to do but it was far too early in companies AI adoption to assume they are entirely dependent on US AI models. The switch is still easy.

That's the core idea of running a business, risk management.

We all knew this phase was pending, 'governance' in the context of the USA/China competition, 'national security reasons' and model/access bans.

It is more expensive and takes longers to develop a proper gateway with multiple providers, and spread the risk, but if you don't do it you are caught with your pants down

I wonder how this will impact current and future AI investment.

I have to believe some foreign investors backed U.S. AI companies because they expected access to top-tier models. If that access becomes uncertain, I can see capital starting to move toward more regional or sovereign AI efforts.

I also think regions like the EU may push harder for AI infrastructure hosted locally and outside direct U.S. control.

The regulation is too soon, too early. Training frontier models requires massive investment, and if access becomes fragmented or politically uncertain, companies may become more cautious about burning that much capital on the next generation of models.
