@rowancheung Machine learning literally recovering text that's been unreadable for two thousand years without physically touching the scroll is one of the wildest practical uses of this stuff I've seen.
@rowancheung If AI just transcribed a scroll reduced to charcoal two thousand years ago. The past was never really gone, It is just poorly indexed. A problem as it seems, that Ai will likely resolve soon.
@rowancheung Great video, Rowan I can tell you put your heart and soul into this one. Keep it up.
@rowancheung Really like your post...keep them coming
The Herculaneum scrolls were buried under this Roman villa when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Every attempt to physically unroll them since has instantly destroyed the layers. In 2023, a global contest called the Vesuvius Challenge launched to use AI to read the scrolls. https://x.com/rowancheung/status/2076694470935122352/photo/1

Researchers used high-res X-ray scans, then machine learning detected faint traces of ancient ink hidden in the fibres. It worked. One scroll turned out to be a work on stoic philosophy. Now the race is on to uncover hundreds more. https://x.com/rowancheung/status/2076694490589659347/photo/1
AI is going to uncover thousands of hidden moments in history. Case in point: it just read a 2,000-year-old scroll burned into solid charcoal. https://x.com/rowancheung/status/2076694448147484766/video/1
