MAXSUN has demonstrated a compact workstation that connects its graphics card through MCIO cables instead of placing it directly in a conventional PCIe x16 slot. VideoCardz inspected the system at Intel Connection 2026, where it appeared alongside several upcoming mini PCs.
A cable changes the internal layout
The workstation pairs a Z890 Mini-ITX motherboard with a discrete GPU mounted on the opposite side of a Cooler Master i100 Air chassis. Routing the PCIe link through compact MCIO connectors lets the two boards sit back-to-back, rather than forcing the graphics card to line up above the motherboard's expansion slot.
That layout can matter in small workstations, where every component competes for space and airflow. MAXSUN's display also used a Cooler Master Hyper 510 low-profile CPU cooler and a V850 SFX Gold power supply.
The company previously showed Z890 and Q870 Mini-ITX motherboards built around two MCIO connectors. VideoCardz reports that those boards can divide their PCIe Gen5 lanes into configurations including x8+x8 or x8 plus two x4 links, giving system designers more options for GPUs, storage or other expansion hardware.
It is still a demonstration
MCIO does not remove every piece of connection hardware. Standard desktop graphics cards lack native MCIO ports, so this setup still needs an adapter or riser between the cable and GPU. The practical gain is placement flexibility on the motherboard side, not a new plug built into ordinary graphics cards.
MAXSUN has not announced a price or release date. For now, the machine is best understood as a platform demonstration of how cable-routed PCIe can make a dense workstation easier to arrange.
