the value exchange for publishers for most of google's existence was a two way street: links for traffic. it's why everyone allowed robots dot txt to index the internet now, to keep apace with rivals, google's end is primarily value extractive. whats the payoff for publishers?
good, important story. google has not enunciated why any publishers should continue to work with them even as they throw a pittance with footnote-level links in the AI summaries at the top the partnerships teams are basically a fig leaf on a coming storm https://www.wsj.com/business/media/google-search-publishers-ai-content-0fb06e41?st=fwYn9L&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

the flipside of this is that most publishers do not have subscription businesses that are sustainable without even the meager amount of traffic sites like google and facebook are sending their way, so it's not like they have much of a choice

@MikeIsaac Every time someone says how AEO helps media and PR a journalist and a PR person lose their jobs.
@MikeIsaac Google refuses to index my site. I have had some top SEO folks investigate and most are just stumped. I’ve been linked by many places like slashdot and techmeme. Posting for over a year. But I am at the point where I’m like who even cares about Google. https://nerds.xyz/
