Self-Interest In OpenAI, Anthropic Stakes Blocks Tough AI Regulation
Reactions from ranked influencers
4 postsThe capital markets are too self-interested to do the “right” thing Too much money is tied up in OpenAI and Anthropic, and if they were to fail by whatever means, that would be more painful (both directly financially and by sentiment) than influential stakeholders and this administration are ostensibly willing to accept (a lot of feasible contagion, esp in private markets). Regulating ourselves out of global competitiveness is ok as long as it serves the interests of a certain few. The self-interest in profits at any costs is to a large extent a (but not only) self-inflicted root cause why we’re in the predicament of being usurped by the Chinese in the first place
Lots of very smart people are appropriately concerned about regulatory capture from top two AI players. And there are many scary press releases but no real due process. If OpenAI violated Hugging Face in a way that “demands” new regulation; let’s start with a formal criminal investigation. With a proper third party investigation. And sincere liability. It can’t be “so super serious” and only analyzed by the defendant. Thats ludicrous. And why would we write new regulation if the crime we are supposedly protecting against isn’t even prosecuted? This stuff makes no sense.
A ton of money is flowing into a handful of companies in AI and robotics which are not using it very efficiently. Or at least not as efficiently as they could be. Theres a desire for everyone to pile into a single vertically integrated behemoth.

But this is necessarily not going to lead to capital efficiency, it locks out competition.
My greatest worry is that the US, when the money runs out, ceases to be competitive, retreats within its borders with bloated national champions in all of these new industries
