The "linguistic trap" is ever-present in AI commentary — reducing the properties of a complex AI system to those of the linguistic subsystem. @sayashk and I contributed to briefly popularizing one of these phrases ("bullshit generator") when ChatGPT was released, but we quickly realized that this framing was not that helpful and stopped using it.
Phrases that make me stop reading whatever you've written about AI: "Stochastic parrots", "Plausibility engines", "autocomplete on steroids", "fancy pattern matching". They suggest you are merely regurgitating shallow critics who haven't updated their views since 2023.
