Britain’s Royal Air Force has created No. III Space Effects Squadron, a unit tasked with protecting the satellites the country depends on for military operations and ordinary services. Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth announced the squadron at the UK Space Power Conference in London, according to The Register.

The unit adds an ability to act against threats, not just observe them. The RAF’s existing No. I Space Operations Squadron and No. II Space Warning Squadron monitor activity and warn of danger. The new squadron is intended to support offensive and defensive space operations and expand as new capabilities enter service.

Electronic warfare instead of missiles

The Ministry of Defence has described “advanced technology,” including electronic warfare, that could disrupt, degrade or deny hostile actions. The likely tools include ground-based systems that interfere with an adversary’s satellite signals, though the ministry told The Register that further operational details are classified.

Britain says it has formally ruled out destructive anti-satellite missile testing and continues to work through the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. That approach avoids creating debris fields like those left by past missile tests. Russia’s 2021 destruction of one of its own defunct satellites endangered the International Space Station, while debris from an earlier Chinese test has also forced avoidance maneuvers.

Satellites are civilian infrastructure, too

The squadron’s mission extends beyond military communications and intelligence. Satellite navigation supports emergency responses, and energy networks use its precise timing signals to synchronize power-grid operations. Weather forecasting, telecommunications and missile warning also depend on orbital systems.

That broad reliance explains why disabling a satellite can have effects far from a battlefield. The new squadron gives the RAF a dedicated organization for responding to those threats, but its actual equipment and rules of operation remain largely undisclosed.
