Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, a new entry in its Claude 5.5 family that the company is positioning as a faster, cheaper-to-run upgrade to Sonnet 5 for routine professional work.
The company says Sonnet 5.5 delivers outputs more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and can reduce the total cost of completing many tasks by up to 30%, even though its list pricing is unchanged. Anthropic says the model remains priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, the same as Sonnet 5.
That pitch puts the emphasis less on a lower sticker price and more on efficiency: getting the same work done with fewer tokens and, in Anthropic’s framing, lower overall task costs.
A Sonnet model for everyday work
Anthropic describes Sonnet 5.5 as best suited to well-scoped everyday tasks, including fixing bugs and creating polished documents, slides and spreadsheets. The company contrasts that with Claude Opus 5.5, which it presents as the stronger option for more complex, open-ended work requiring sustained judgment.
CNBC reported that Anthropic sees Sonnet as the choice for more cost-conscious users who need execution on routine tasks rather than the higher-end reasoning associated with Opus 5.5. Anthropic also told CNBC that Sonnet 5.5 does not push the frontier of the company’s overall model capabilities, but does improve on its predecessor for coding and knowledge-work tasks.
Same pricing, new safety posture
One of the more notable changes is on safety. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 is the first Sonnet model to launch with cyber safeguards and fallbacks similar to those it uses for its most capable systems. The company says those protections are aimed at a narrow set of high-risk requests, while routine software development and most life sciences work are unaffected.
CNBC similarly reported that Anthropic characterized Sonnet 5.5’s cybersecurity capabilities as a large improvement over its predecessor, prompting the company to apply stronger fallback and safeguard systems at launch.
Sonnet 5.5 is available now, with CNBC reporting that Anthropic is also making the model available across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
