Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal is expected to miss one to two months with a tear in his calf, coach Rod Brind'Amour said Tuesday.

Staal was injured during warmups before Carolina's 4-1 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. He did not play in the game and had no points through the first six games of the season.

The absence removes a key defensive forward from the defending Stanley Cup champions. Staal recorded 12 points in 19 playoff games last season, including six goals in the Stanley Cup Final, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP.

Carolina moved Mark Jankowski into Staal's spot between Jordan Martinook and Nikolaj Ehlers. Brind'Amour also said the team expects to recall a forward, though that player does not necessarily need to be a center.
