In a September 25, 2026 statement outlining the NFLPA's perspective, JC Tretter said union and league field experts were working in Brazil ahead of the Rio game. NFLPA experts recommended reinforced stitching and brought in equipment to reinforce as much of the field as possible, with evaluations planned through kickoff. Tretter described loose, patchy turf and excessive slipping as generally more of a playability and performance issue than a significant injury concern—but said safety should not be the only standard. He said two of the three games played in Brazil had field-related issues and argued that international expansion must maintain the standards players deserve.
