Coco Gauff Loses at China Open While Facing Racist Abuse Wave
World No. 4 Coco Gauff was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Elise Mertens in the China Open round of 16. Following controversy in her prior match over a replayed point, Gauff faced a wave of racist abuse online, describing it as 'draining' and turning off her phone.
TLDR
The abuse highlighting online toxicity in professional sports raises concerns about player welfare and mental health. For a major star like Gauff, the intersection of officiating controversy and racial harassment underscores broader issues of fairness and safety in elite tennis and social media's impact on athletes.
