The New York Jets ruled out wide receiver Garrett Wilson on Friday, Nov. 6, for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs because of a concussion, Rich Cimini reported for ESPN. The NFL attributed the Week 9 ruling to head coach Aaron Glenn.
Wilson leads the Jets with 43 receptions for 527 yards and three touchdowns this season. New York enters the matchup at 2-6, having lost three consecutive games, Cimini reported.
Wilson’s injury timeline
According to Cimini, Wilson took a blow to the head from safety Jeremy Chinn on the next-to-last play of the Jets’ 38-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders the previous week. Wilson stayed in the game and appeared fine afterward, but reported symptoms Monday, Glenn said, according to ESPN.
The team announced Wednesday that Wilson was in concussion protocol. Cimini’s Nov. 6 report gave no return timetable.
Larger roles for Mitchell and Cooper
ESPN reported that Adonai Mitchell would become the No. 1 wide receiver, with rookie Omar Cooper Jr. also taking a bigger role in Wilson’s absence. Mitchell is coming off a career-high 142 receiving yards.
Cooper had no targets against the Raiders after posting consecutive 100-yard receiving games, according to Cimini.
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich emphasized adapting to the available receivers’ strengths rather than expecting them to duplicate Wilson’s game. “We have a lot of confidence in our guys,” Reich said, according to ESPN.
