Ditka's NFL legacy spanned both sides of the sideline. ESPN described a career that earned him Hall of Fame recognition as a player before he became a championship coach, while Adam Schefter wrote that Ditka revolutionized the tight end position.

As Chicago's head coach, Ditka led the 1985 Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX. TSN noted that he was the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The NFL said it was deeply saddened by the death of the Hall of Fame coach and tight end. In a personal remembrance, Matthew Berry recalled how Ditka welcomed and supported him early in his ESPN career.
