@VivamusDSVIVAMUS MLB | NL WILD CARD GAME 2 October 1, 2026 Padres 4, Cubs 1 San Diego wins the series, 2-0. For me, Game 2 separated in the fourth inning. Chicago cut the deficit to 2-1 and loaded the bases, finally putting San Diego under real pressure, but the Cubs managed only one run. San Diego answered almost immediately when Gavin Sheets turned a 100.8 mph fastball into a two-run homer, stretching the lead to 4-1. That contrast told the story. Chicago needed traffic to scratch out a run; San Diego punished one mistake for two. The Padres bullpen handled the rest, covering 5⅔ scoreless innings and allowing only two hits. Across the series, though, I keep coming back to Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Cubs entered October with an MVP candidate who had spent six months affecting games with his bat, speed and defense, yet he finished the series 0-for-7 with four strikeouts and one walk. Chicago led baseball in runs during the regular season but scored one run in 18 innings against San Diego. Crow-Armstrong never recorded a hit, and Alex Bregman also finished the series hitless. To me, that says more about the Padres than the sweep itself. They neutralized the hitters Chicago depended on most and forced the rest of the lineup to solve a bullpen that never gave them much room. Now San Diego heads to Milwaukee after holding baseball’s highest-scoring offense to one run in an entire series.
