MLB announced Bill Giles’ death at 92, saying he spent more than half a century in the Phillies’ front office and ownership groups and was instrumental to their 1980 and 2008 World Series championships. The league said his eight decades in baseball began with positions in the Reds and Astros organizations. Giles had served as honorary National League president since 2001. For many of those years, he presented NL champions with the Warren Giles Trophy, named for his father, a former NL president and Hall of Fame executive.
