Villanova men's basketball to leave the Big 5 after more than 70 years
USA TODAY reports the five remaining schools plan a round-robin format beginning in the 2027–28 season.
TLDR
USA TODAY reports Villanova will leave Philadelphia's Big 5 starting with the 2027–28 season. Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph's and Temple will remain. Coach Kevin Willard disputed that leaving was Villanova's decision and called Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Jeff Neiburg “a bad writer.” Awful Announcing says Willard's comments nevertheless confirmed much of Neiburg's reporting about Villanova's proposed format, which the other schools did not accept.
