Michelle Cooper scored an early extra-time penalty to send the Kansas City Current into the 2026 NWSL semifinals with a 1-0 win over Angel City FC. The No. 4 seed eliminated the No. 5 seed in the Nov. 7 quarterfinal, Bella Munson reported for Equalizer Soccer.
The match at CPKC Stadium went through a scoreless 90 minutes, the Kansas City Star reported. That was a sharp contrast to the teams’ regular-season output: Equalizer Soccer reported that they had been the NWSL’s two highest-scoring teams, with 54 goals apiece.
Kansas City finished regulation and stoppage time with a 16-7 advantage in shots, including 10 second-half attempts, according to the Star. But the Current needed extra time before Cooper supplied the game’s only goal from the penalty spot.
The victory avoided a repeat of the previous season, when Kansas City lost its home quarterfinal, as both the Star and Equalizer Soccer reported.
After the Nov. 7 win, the Current awaited the winner of Sunday’s Gotham FC-Seattle Reign quarterfinal. The Star outlined two possible semifinal destinations: a Gotham victory would send Kansas City to Gotham’s home field, while a Seattle victory would give the Current another match at CPKC Stadium.
