McGetchin measures 730 feet (222 meters) wide and is believed to have formed in spring 2024 from a comet or asteroid impact, AFP reports. Space.com describes it as the largest newly formed impact crater identified to date. Phys.org reports that the impact churned the lunar surface for more than 66 miles and says its debris pattern may inform protection for future lunar bases.
