    TLDR

Rocket Lab says it has moved Neutron’s first flight to 2027. Spaceflight Now reports that CEO Peter Beck outlined a three-step process following the discovery of a manufacturing defect in the first propellant tank. Beck said that, if all goes well, the company expects to complete the first two steps before Q1 2027 and the third during that quarter, after which it expects to be ready to share a new launch target.

Rocket Lab said on October 14 that Neutron’s inaugural launch is now expected in 2027. The company did not give a more specific launch target in the release, instead directing readers to an investor presentation for further details.

    Why the schedule moved

Spaceflight Now reported that Rocket Lab found a manufacturing defect in the forward dome of Neutron’s first propellant tank. The report said founder and CEO Peter Beck outlined a three-step process for addressing the problem.

If that work goes to plan, Beck said the first two steps should be finished before the first quarter of 2027 and the third during that quarter. Rocket Lab expects to set a more specific launch target after those steps are complete. That makes the 2027 timing a company expectation rather than a firm launch date.

What Neutron is designed to do

Rocket Lab describes Neutron as a reusable medium-lift rocket built for satellite constellations, national security missions and planetary exploration. The company lists a payload capacity of 13,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit. Its first stage uses nine Archimedes engines burning liquid oxygen and methane.

The rocket’s dedicated test and launch site is Launch Complex 3 at Wallops Island, Virginia.
