Pioneer Labs says it used evolution to adapt an Earth microbe to source all its nutrients directly from Martian materials. In its September 22, 2026, announcement, the company claims equipment fitting in one rocket launch could produce enough building materials for a small city. It envisions shelters stocked with water, oxygen and return-trip rocket fuel before astronauts arrive, and describes the microbe as the first of five organisms it needs to “green Mars.”
