Forget Waldo. Where’s Luna 9?
Luna 9, the first spacecraft to soft-land on the moon in 1966, deployed a lander module that used a landing bag to survive impact. Despite bouncing a few times and coming to rest in Oceanus Procellarum, the exact location of the lander remains uncertain due to the technology limitations of the era. The craft sent back dramatic panoramas of the lunar surface, but the Soviets were not keen to share the data. The Indian Chandrayaan-2 orbiter may soon confirm the leading theories about its location, which are within 5 to 25 km of the presumed site.
