New Tick-Borne Virus Identified in China Causes Flu-Like Illness
Researchers identified a novel orthonairovirus (ALTNV) in ~10.4% of screened patients and ~1.3% of ticks, causing fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and low platelet counts. Highest prevalence in Haemaphysalis longicornis; coinfections were more severe.
TLDR
Emerging pathogen discovery expands understanding of tick-borne disease risks and surveillance needs globally. Explains previously unattributed febrile illnesses and demonstrates ongoing emergence of novel viruses in regions with high tick exposure, relevant to public health preparedness.
