Two new amoeba species discovered in an Outer Banks marsh
The University of Maryland reports that biologist Julia Van Etten found the Paulinella amoebas with a hobby-grade microscope during a family vacation. She is starting lab cultures of both species.

The University of Maryland reports that Van Etten collected water from a roadside marsh in North Carolina’s Outer Banks and discovered two previously undescribed Paulinella species, P. marae and P. murrayi. If she can establish lab cultures, she plans to study how their photosynthetic organelle evolved, including the role of genes acquired from other organisms.
