Human tau seeds produced matching disease-specific folds in mouse brains
In a study published in Nature, researchers found that Alzheimer’s-derived tau seeds led to buildup in mouse neurons, while corticobasal degeneration seeds led to buildup in both neurons and glial cells.
TLDR
Researchers publishing in Nature injected tau filaments from human brains with Alzheimer’s disease or corticobasal degeneration into wild-type mouse brains. Newly formed mouse tau filaments retained the distinct structures of the human seeds and produced different patterns of tau buildup, supporting a prion-like mechanism for disease-specific pathology in mice.
