NASA Awards $38M Contract for Lunar 5G and Wi-Fi Network Infrastructure

NASA's Glenn Research Center awarded Modulate Space a contract to develop a scalable 5G network with Wi-Fi 6 for the lunar surface. The project includes a network-in-a-box lab demo through January 2028 and lunar demonstration through December 2028.

TLDR

This contract signals concrete engineering progress toward sustained lunar presence and supports Artemis program goals for permanent Moon bases. The adoption of Earth-standard communications technology (5G/Wi-Fi) rather than mission-specific custom systems represents a shift toward scalable infrastructure for long-term lunar operations and demonstrates how terrestrial tech translates to off-world challenges.

@outerspacetodayJUST IN: NASA has awarded Modulate Space a $38 million contract to build a 5G network on the Moon. The company will develop a lunar surface communications system with built-in Wi-Fi 6 for NASA's Glenn Research Center. It will use the same standards-based technology that powers phones on Earth, designed to support future Moon Base operations. The work comes in two phases. First, NASA will develop and demonstrate a "5G network-in-a-box" in the lab, running through Jan. 2028. Then an integrated 5G and Wi-Fi network will fly to the lunar surface for a demonstration, with that phase running through Dec. 2028. The goal is a scalable network that astronauts, rovers, and landers could share, instead of each mission bringing its own custom radio. This would be essential technology for NASA's planned permanent Moon Base.
