New Cretaceous bird species from Australia doubles named fossil record
Paleontologists formally described Tenuicruris piscanexum, a new enantiornithine bird species from Australia's ~105-million-year-old Toolebuc Formation. The slender-legged bird is only the second named Australian Cretaceous bird species.
TLDR
Australia's Cretaceous bird record is extremely sparse, with fewer than 12 bones known total. This discovery doubles the named species count and improves understanding of Cretaceous bird diversity and ecology in Gondwanan inland-sea ecosystems, significantly enriching the paleontological record of the region.
