Normal-looking tissue beside tumors shows more Y chromosome loss than cancer-free tissue
ScienceAlert reports that researchers found the greatest Y chromosome loss in tumors, with a smaller increase in nearby tissue that looked normal under a microscope.
TLDR
A study published in JCI Insight examined 1,000 archived tissue samples from 405 males. Researchers found more Y chromosome loss in normal-looking tissue beside tumors than in tissue from men without cancer, and more still in the tumors. ScienceAlert reports that the study cannot show whether Y chromosome loss helps cause cancer. Its potential use as an early detection clue has not been tested.
