Anthropic announced on September 23, 2026, that Claude had discovered a previously unknown enzyme system in bacteriophage DNA. It says repeating DNA beside the enzyme’s gene looks somewhat like CRISPR, but much more work is needed to understand what the system does and whether it could have similar uses.

The company calls this the first result from its new molecular biology lab. It says Claude analyzes data and literature to generate hypotheses, while scientists review those ideas and perform all the lab work.

One commenter calls the repeat-pattern discovery meaningful but argues that Anthropic’s framing gives too little credit to earlier human research on the enzyme and nearby DNA.
