Fossils suggest amphibians lived in the sea 237 million years ago
Nature reports two armoured amphibian fossils from a region of China that was a salty sea in the Late Triassic.
TLDR
Nature reports that researchers provisionally named the 74-centimetre-long, armoured species Gerrothorax maritimus. They argue that the fossils’ preservation far from ancient land, along with strontium levels in the bones that match seawater, suggests the animals grew up drinking seawater. New Scientist describes it as the first known marine amphibian and says it might have been an ambush hunter.
