Thwaites Glacier could add twice the previously estimated sea-level rise by 2100
Interesting Engineering reports a new Antarctic ice-sheet model projects Thwaites could add 30 mm to sea levels by 2100.
TLDR
Interesting Engineering reports that a new Antarctic ice-sheet model projects Thwaites Glacier could add 30 millimeters to sea levels by 2100, twice earlier estimates. Nature Communications says including grounding zones, where seawater intrudes beneath grounded ice and causes melting, improves simulations of Thwaites’ past behavior. A separate post says the glacier contains enough ice to raise global seas around 65 centimeters if it collapses completely.
