@outerspacetodayJUST IN: NASA says its Moon Base is running ahead of schedule, with the first element now expected to launch in December followed by near-monthly robotic missions to the lunar surface beginning in early 2027. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency expects to beat the original national-space-policy target of putting the first Moon Base elements in place by 2030. The plan is to send infrastructure, rovers and other equipment ahead of astronauts so hardware is already operating on the surface when crews arrive. NASA is also developing a public website that will allow people to follow construction of the lunar base as missions arrive. “We’re leaving no doubts this time,” Isaacman said. “It’s all in HD.”

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency plans to launch the first element of its Moon Base in December 2026, according to reporting from Payload. That would be followed by near-monthly uncrewed robotic missions beginning in early 2027.
Isaacman delivered the update during Thursday’s White House Office of Science and Technology Policy “Science: A New Golden Age Summit.” Payload reported that he expects NASA to beat the national space policy goal of placing the first Moon Base elements on the lunar surface by 2030.
The plan is to send infrastructure, rovers and other equipment before astronauts arrive. Isaacman said that approach would allow crews to find hardware already operating on the surface, although the available report did not give a date for the first astronaut mission.
NASA is also developing a public website with the National Design Studio that would let people follow construction as missions reach the Moon. “We’re leaving no doubts this time,” Isaacman said. “It’s all in HD.”
The December date remains a reported schedule, not a completed launch milestone. Payload’s account says the first element is planned for “December,” while social posts summarizing the remarks identify that as December 2026.
The Moon Base update came alongside a NASA and Department of Energy agreement to accelerate work on space nuclear power and propulsion. The framework covers the design, testing, launch integration and operation of space nuclear systems.
One proposed component, Lunar Reactor-1, is intended to provide fission power for the Moon Base, with a launch-ready system due by 2030. Payload noted that the agreement formalizes existing plans and did not include new funding figures or cost estimates.
That distinction matters for the new timeline. Isaacman described a faster sequence of robotic deliveries, but the reporting did not establish a construction budget or say when astronauts would reach the base.
