Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says a clinic has opened at the National Institutes of Health to study and care for patients experiencing health problems after vaccination. In an October 8 announcement, Kennedy said he was joined by NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz and CDC Director Erica Schwartz.

Kennedy said the effort is intended to listen to patients and families who report vaccine injuries, follow the evidence and use what officials learn to improve vaccine safety and rebuild trust in public health institutions.

Studying reports does not establish causation

A health problem occurring after vaccination does not by itself show that a vaccine caused it. The CDC says its Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System accepts reports even when the person submitting one is unsure about causation. CDC and FDA investigate possible safety signals further when patterns emerge.

The announcement did not specify eligibility, enrollment, staffing, which vaccines or conditions the clinic will study, or its treatment and research protocols.
