Gentle shinbone compression may help animals recover from brain injury
Medical Xpress reports that 14-day survival rose from 20% to 90% in animal models of severe brain injury treated with gentle shinbone compression, alongside improved movement and memory.
TLDR
ScienceAlert reports that researchers in China applied controlled, repeated pressure to the shinbones of mice and pigs and observed better survival and recovery after brain injury. Medical Xpress reports that 14-day survival rose from 20% to 90% in animal models of severe brain injury.
The experiments suggest pressure-sensitive bone cells may release protective signals that travel through the blood to the brain, ScienceAlert explains. Transferring blood serum from treated mice to injured, untreated mice also reduced nerve-cell loss.
The limits matter: all the animals were male, and each injured pig group contained only six animals. ScienceAlert cautions that the findings do not mean anyone should squeeze a person's leg after a head injury. Potential treatments based on the work are not ready for patients.
