EarthSky reports that NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted McGetchin Crater, describing it as the largest newly formed crater yet found in the solar system. PBS NewsHour says researchers dated the impact by comparing before-and-after images. NewsHour also reports that a 4-mile-wide area around the crater is cooler at night than nearby surroundings. Researchers believe rocks and dust thrown up by the impact settled less densely, causing the material to retain less heat at night.
